this is exactly what social anxiety is like, and it’s not fun at all.

Cast bronze moth. I actually made the flask containing it over 2 years ago, filled it with investment, and didn’t have the right crucible for the flask size so I forgot about it. Last Saturday I found it and decided to give it a go, thinking it was unlikely it would work since the investment was so old but it was worth 40 grams of bronze to find out. It was powdery and loose out of the kiln, and I had to be careful transferring because it wanted to fall out of the stainless steel flask surrounding it. But it worked, and now I’ve got a little bronze moth that I found dead in the studio and decided to entomb in plaster 2 years ago. And also I need to cast so many more moths… #lostwax #organiccasting #metalsmith #skullery

I will always regret not learning more about metal work

it’s never too late!

I was really timid in college and always felt like the frequent users and staff of our metalshop were cliquey and judgemental of beginners and mistakes. Most of that was probably my social anxiety, but it kept me from really diving into metalwork outside of class sessions and I regretted it (same with the woodshop).

A few years ago I found a class locally and got into it again, at a jewelry scale.

There are also wonderful places like @penlandschool where you can go and stay and immerse yourself in classes, like I did last year for glass casting. I plan to go again sometime and relearn confidence with my woodworking skills too.

beautiful and very nicely detailed casting. well worth saving.
